GAINSBOURG EST UN GÉNIE
(Gainsbourg is a genius)
Fiction, 19min, 2008
Did you ever notice how memories take over real life experiences we’ve had? The more we recall a memory, the more this memory changes. In actuality, we’re remembering the last memory we had of an event, instead of remembering the event itself.
"Gainsbourg est un génie" is the story of a young girl falling in love with a young man, who she'll never see again. With humor and poetry, the young girl's monologue recalls the memory of one particular meeting with him over and over again. As we follow this love obsession, this memory of him and her feelings are constantly changing. The film director uses her family’s own super-8 film footage to take over the memory part of the movie as memories become interchanged with other memories. Taking over, interpretation, constant evolution, recycling: "Gainsbourg est un génie" explores the mind of an obsessed young girl in love.
